Have you made a list of possible niches?

If you’ve read my previous post then hopefully you will have a list of things that you might be able to turn into profitable niches for you.

Now it’s time to start your research.

1 Which of the niches do you have most experience in?

Give yourself a score out of 5, 5 being the most experience, to help you narrow it down.  Maybe come up three areas that you want to focus on - but don’t forget about the others, they might be your next project!!

2 How much competition is there?

What are the competitors doing?  You probably know about the top few websites in the niche already (because it should be something you’re interested in remember?).  Have you always been frustrated in not being able to find the information you wanted?  Do you know of a resource you use that might add value to your site, over and above that used by the competition, i.e. a YouTube video etc.

3 Are there forums etc that you can particpate in?

Participating in forums, and using your web address in your signature, is a good way of becoming recognised as an authority in your subject.  it will help to bring visitors to your site - but only if your comments are useful.

4 Do any of the areas have particular advantages for buying online?

If people are going to be able to get their products cheaper online, or you can source something exclusive for your readers then this might indicate theres a profitable niche to be exploited.

5 Does your sector have a range of merchants to promote?

There’s no point sitting down and writing loads of articles and pages for a website if you’re not going to be able to monetize it somehow.  Most merchants will have an Affiliate Network manage their account for them.  The main Networks in the UK can be found on the Affiliates4u.com forum.  Have a browse around, and if you want to you can even post a question asking for some help.  As long as you’re not to revealing about a niche - you don’t want anyone stealing your thunder!

You can also have a look here on AffiliateBounty and browse through all the programmes listed.

So by now you should have two or three possible markets for you to begin with.   What you need to do then is do a more detailed indepth market study and carry out a proper assessment of whether you can make it work.  You need to learn more about the niche, assess your own skills - content writing, website development and design skills etc, as well as understanding the customers.  I’ll probably try and cover this in great detail in another post.

Good luck with your research.  If there’s anything you also try, why not leave a comment about it.
